From Passion to Purpose: The Birth of Garden Hoes
What started as a simple yard sale turned into a revelation. While one partner’s items remained untouched, Amuon’s plants flew off the table, bringing in over $1,000 in just one Saturday. That pivotal moment led to the realization that his gift for growing and nurturing plants was something special. Fast forward 2.5 years, and Garden Hoes has blossomed into a thriving business with an outdoor greenhouse that transforms into a plant boutique every third Saturday of the month.
These monthly events are more than just sales—they’re vibrant garden parties. Customers don’t just leave with plants; they leave with an experience. Free mimosas, seed packets harvested from their own garden, and even a raffle for a coveted Monstera albo make each gathering a celebration of nature and community.
Sustainability Meets Conservation
Garden Hoes is committed to plant conservation in a way that few other nurseries are. With a permit from the Department of Natural Resources, they are one of the few businesses licensed to sell endangered plant species native to Georgia. From the delicate Franklin tree to the striking Georgia aster and vibrant royal catchfly, their nursery serves as a bridge between preservation and accessibility, ensuring these species continue to thrive in their rightful habitat.
Recognizing the urgent need to protect the endangered monarch butterfly, Garden Hoes also grows a variety of native milkweeds, including the butterfly weed, swamp milkweed, common milkweed, and the rare Georgia native purple milkweed. These plants serve as a crucial lifeline for pollinators, reinforcing the business’s mission to foster biodiversity through thoughtful, sustainable practices.
Cultivating Community, One Plant at a Time
Beyond conservation, education is at the core of Garden Hoes’ mission. Every interaction—whether at their monthly plant boutique or through one-on-one conversations—centers on empowering customers with the knowledge to grow and sustain their own gardens. From food-growing techniques to plant care, Garden Hoes ensures that every buyer gains the skills and confidence to nurture their own green space.
This grassroots movement is more than just a business—it’s a cultural shift. By merging entrepreneurship with ecological responsibility, Amuon and his partner are proving that small, community-driven initiatives can make a lasting impact.
Support Local, Grow Global
Garden Hoes is more than just a nursery; it’s a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of plants to bring people together.
